Wilfred Huggins, the renowned publisher of The Midget Magician, began his career as a hard-working performer, including formative years as a London street magician, and in 1939 he importantly documented the core repertoire of the classic outdoor magic buskers in his 1939 classic Secrets of the Street Conjurers, likely the first book devoted to sidewalk sorcerers and their ambulatory art.
Huggins precisely detailed the sleights and nuances of the effects in this well-written booklet, which sold so well that Johnson reprinted it twice, adding five pages of additional effects by Frederic Culpitt to the second and third editions. Ever since, however, it’s been out of print.
Now you can read these secrets once again. Our exact facsimile reprint is reproduced from Johnson’s third edition, which includes the extra five pages of Culpitt’s effects and a whimsical cover sketch.
